Remembering Christine Alexander

Monday, June 27th, 2011

News of Christine Alexander’s death has saddened the literacy community to whose work she was devoted as a leader since her arrival in New Haven in 1998.  Condolences to members of her family, who request that in lieu of flowers a donation of books or time as a volunteer be made to New Haven Reads, which she founded.  She also helped create the Literacy Coalition of Greater New Haven as its founding chair. A memorial service to celebrate Chris Alexander’s life will be held later in the summer.

Kirsten Levinsohn of New Haven Reads Joins Literacy Coalition Board

Monday, June 20th, 2011

Kirsten Levinsohn, since 2010 the co-executive director of New Haven Reads (with Christine Alexander, who was founding chair of the Literacy Coalition after she founded New Haven Reads), has joined Chris Alexander and other colleagues on the Literacy Coalition board.  Kirsten Levinsohn has extensive education and nonprofit experience, including in the area of science literacy.   Following five years as a second-grade teacher, for more than two decades she led the Leslie Science and Nature Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  It’s now been a year since she departed one college town –reportedly leaving “big sandals to fill” – for another.

Already, Kirsten Levinsohn has immersed herself in the New Haven community and can often be seen bicycling around the Elm City. Welcome, Kirsten.
