Sunday, June 24th, 2012

It has been a year since Chris Alexander died, the last Sunday of June 2011.  Those who knew and worked with her continue to remember her with admiration and affection.  We offer her family comfort on this tremendous loss.  She is missed not only by her loved ones but by many neighbors throughout the New Haven community she enhanced.

The New York Public Library, Continuity and Change

Sunday, June 17th, 2012

A November 2011 post on “Library Art, Science, and Technologies” included mention of Harvard history professor and university library director Robert Darnton.

Since then, he has received an honorary degree from Yale and written a June 2012 article in the New York Review of Books “in defense of the New York Public Library.” The “loud debate” over that library’s extensive renovation and reorganization plans were also treated this month in a report on NPR.

Summer Learning, Benefits and Anniversaries

Saturday, June 9th, 2012

A  New Haven Independent article June 5 discussed Leadership, Education, and Athletics in Partnership (LEAP). LEAP celebrates its 20th anniversary with events during its alumni reunion, from June 22-24.

In the article on LEAP’s return to the Dwight neighborhood (as it continues as well to work in other neighborhoods around New Haven), literacy was cited as a priority, to counter what is known as “summer learning loss.”  [LEAP Executive Director Esther] “…Massie explained that the summer program focuses on literacy skills because it is very easy for kids to backslide in their reading ability when they don’t have to go to school every day. She explained that summer programs can help prevent that kind of regression, and even increase the likelihood of graduation.”

On June 23, a “Noche de Musica” event will benefit the Spanish Community of Wallingford (SCOW) on its 40th anniversary.
