“Hear Our Voices”

Tuesday, August 13th, 2013

The adult students developing their reading, writing, and English skills through the assistance of Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven have published a new collection of their stories, statements, and beliefs.

In August 2012 this blog cited Hear Our Voices: Essays and Reflections from Literacy Volunteer Students

Now the 2013 edition of Hear Our Voices is available.  It includes sections on culture and tradition, “dreams for the future,” family, learning English, living in America, and “what to tell Americans.”  Among the latter group are reflections such as “Americans, stop being wasteful!” and “Talking to your child about violence.”

An introductory letter from the executive director of Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven cites some 230 “volunteers who worked as tutors [in 2012-13 and] … helped their students learn how to fill out job applications, how to read books to their children, how to tell their stories in English and how to write those stories.”
