International Literacy Day (marking its 50th anniversary since UNESCO first declared this occasion in 1965) is September 8, symbolizing a kind of literacy season as a new academic year gets underway.
Of course, as this website indicates, literacy should be a priority every day.
During the coming weeks, among the organizations holding major events in the New Haven region are:
- Concepts for Adaptive Learning, September 9 fund-raising benefit
- Junta for Progressive Action, September 10 fund-raising benefit
- The Jewish Coalition for Literacy, September 17 orientation for volunteer reading partners
- Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven, September 9 tutor trainings begin, with additional events through the month and Meriden fundraisers October 1 and 8
- New Haven Reads, October 23 Spelling Bee after fall tutoring begins and the book bank reopens this month
This is just a sampling. Happy Literacy Day.
