Shirley A. Jackson has joined the board of the Literacy Coalition of Greater New Haven. Professor of Sociology at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) and a former chair of that department, she has been a member of the SCSU faculty since 1998. Her areas of expertise range from social movements and ethnicity in the U.S. to service learning, and her other board memberships include service with the Girl Scouts of Connecticut. Her Ph.D. is from UC, Santa Barbara.

Her fellow Literacy Coalition board members welcomed Shirley Jackson to her first meeting on February 16. They thank her SCSU colleague Lorrie Verplaetse, who preceded her on the Coalition board, for her service and also for helping to identify a worthy successor.

The Literacy Coalition of Greater Haven is pleased to announce that it has received a grant for $3200 from the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven. Many thanks to the Community Foundation for supporting the Coalition’s work to reach more communities and organizations throughout the region, including through the LiteracyEveryday website. The Coalition – a lean organization that depends on volunteers and on the sharing of other partners in the Literacy Resource Center at 4 Science Park – applied only for one of the Foundation’s small grants, so as not to compete with direct providers of literacy services that may be seeking larger grants from the foundation.

A December 27, 2010 post to this blog noted: “Minnesota Public Radio recently had a segment on “changing technology and the future of libraries” – something of interest to librarians and their users everywhere, including New Haven, where the new city librarian is seeking community views, as indicated in a December 20 news article on this LiteracyEveryday site. Another discussion of libraries comes from Harvard history professor, and university library director, Robert Darnton in the New York Review of Books.”

Also in 2010, the New Haven Review included Mark Oppenheimer’s interview –“On Running a Library in the Age of Kindles” – of the new city librarian, Christopher J. Korenowsky, in its issue 007. Harvard Magazine described, in an article by Jonathan Shaw, how that university’s libraries are handling “disruptive change.”

In a September 2011 article, Zoe Gorman’s Yale Daily News article explored digitization of Yale’s collections after the arrival of new university librarian Susan Gibbons. An April 2011 NPR report addressed, “The Future of Libraries in the E-Book Age.”

Now through January 28, as Joshua Mamis notes in a New Haven Independent article, an ArtSpace exhibition considers “Library Science.”
